February 2 - Bonnie's talk
Bonnie from the Carnegie Library will talk about the programs and opportunities available to members.

February 9 - Valentines Day and Weddings
We will have the small group discussion format. All are encouraged to bring paper and scissors and glue to make valentines while we talk. Also, and more importantly, bring your wedding pictures!

February 16 - Craft Sampler
Are you interested in learning a new craft? Well, some of our members will be demonstrating their hobbies this week, and showing you new ways to be creative! (Our program with Jon Rubin from Conflict Kitchen has been postponed.)

February 23 - Turkey Nationality Day
Our members from Turkey will share information about their country.

Global Links is on February 8th.

Larry Glasgow, professor at University of Pittsburgh and old IWAP friend, will talk about black history in Pittsburgh with particular emphasis on August Wilson in the Hill District.

September 8th Getting to Know You and IWAP!
We will see a short DVD and hear how IWAP work before breaking into
small groups to get to know each other better.

September 15th Food Tasting
Grocery shopping can be a challenge when you are unsure of what
certain products taste like. Members will bring in food they made
using packaged products (along with the package). For example, someone
might make Stove Top Stuffing. They will prepare the dish at home,
bring it and the box to the meeting on Thursday and we will all get to
taste it.

September 22nd History of Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh played a major role in the development of the USA over the
centuries. We'll give you a few more historical reasons to brag about
Pittsburgh!

Though it is the end of our year, we have a great month planned for May:

2 May: IWAP volunteers for the Pittsburgh Marathon. We’ve done such a great job in previous years that we have been given 15 tables to man. The “T-shirt” was modelled by Linda at our last meeting.

6 May: We learn about India from Mita. She is going to give us a slide presentation.

13 May: With summer vacations around the corner today’s discussion will be places of interest near and far within the USA.

19 May: The book group meets. There was a request that we read a good children’s book, so we have chosen “Charlotte’s Web” by E.B. White. It’s about the friendship developed between a spider, Charlotte, and a pig; and how Charlotte saves his life. It’s a good read and the drawings are good too. Alicia hosts.

20 May: Last meeting before we break for the summer. As per tradition it will be a potluck luncheon. So ladies, dust off your cookbooks and pick a dish to prepare.

27May: Mark your calendars for our field trip to Falling Waters, the house built by the well-known architect Frank Lloyd Wright for the Kaufmans. Ann will pass around the sign up sheet as usual. If you miss signing up here is Ann’s contact details: 412-828-4663; e-mail: oakboyds@aol.com

Native American Dancers

8 April: Katherine is going to tell us about the Steps & Bridges of Pittsburgh

15 April: Pittsburgh has been selected as the North American host city by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to join World Environment Day(WED) 2010, “Many Species. One Planet. One Future.” Highlighting the theme “Biodiversity — Ecosystems Management and the Green Economy.” Activities kick off on Earth Day and culminate on June 5th WED. To do our part, we will have a plant swap – bring any extra plants that you have to exchange with others (you don’t need to have plants to take plants to start your garden). Yasmeen will give us tips to “Bring Nature Home”. How to make our small gardens a part of the bigger whole; as well as a refuge for our children and wildlife.

22 April: A representative of the local Native American community will give us a presentation.

23 April: The book group will meet at Yasmeen’s home to discuss French Women Don’t Get Fat: The Secret of Eating for Pleasure by Mireille Guiliano. Ms. Guilliano was the CEO of Clicquot, Inc. the US branch of the champagne company, which she helped found. It’s a fun book about living life to the fullest and maintaining a healthy equilibrium.

28 April: Cooking class – German I believe. Katherine will bring us up to date at our meeting.

29 April: We will end our April programmes with an energetic morning of salsa – led by Rosa. Come prepared to dance and learn new steps. If you enjoy this, may be we can get together a group and go to one of the various venues for salsa dancing.

3 March: A visit to the August Wilson Centre – as per the e-mail sent out by Ann. Everyone who’s interested should be at the Centre, 980 Liberty Avenue, by 11:00 a.m. The cost is $7.00 per person. As usual lunch to follow, may be soul food if it appeals to everyone and we can locate a restaurant.

4 March: A discussion facilitated by Kate on women’s issues to mark International Women’s Day.

10 March: Our day to volunteer at Global Links. They have been working really hard to help Haiti; now Chile will also require aid. They will be most appreciative of our help. 11 March: Tentatively Nationality Day programme on Afghanistan. Ann is waiting to hear back from World Affairs Council on the speaker.

17 March: Third Wednesday so it must be the book group discussion. We will try again to meet and discuss The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. Copies are available in the library so I hope we’ll see a number of you.

18 March: Naomi Frankel and voice.

25 March: The vernal equinox is on the 20th so it must be spring. We will discuss Spring Holidays and Celebrations around the globe.

31 March: Our monthly cooking class, which we hope will not be cancelled. Katherine Earl will let us know the theme for this month and have the sign-up sheet during our regular meetings. Don’t forget to let Katherine know if you sign up and then can’t come.

11 February: Valentine’s Day is around the corner, so today will deal with romantic matters.

18 February: Allegheny, means ‘fairest river’, Monongahela, means ‘falling bank’, they join to form the Ohio, which means ‘beautiful river’. These are all Native American words we use regularly, yet we know little about the people who gave these rivers the names. Our guest speaker today will be from the Council of the Three Rivers Indian Reservation and we will learn a little about the original people of our region.

24 February: The last Wednesday, so it must be our monthly cooking class. We will cook keeping Valentine in mind - red coloured foods! Katherine Earl will have the sign-up sheet during our regular meetings.

25 February: Craft sharing. Bring in a craft that you do for a ‘show and tell’

Our book group meeting is supposed to be on the 17th (third Wednesday). One of our illustrious co-chairs is going to be out of town and has requested that we kindly postpone it to sometime during the last week. Let me know which day suits – Monday (22nd), Tuesday (23rd) or Friday (26th). The book is The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. There are plenty of copies in the library and you will go through it fast.
