February Meeting Programs

02/05 - Movie Day
Plan on coming at 9:30 am and staying until noon as we settle in to a couple of hours of entertainment- popcorn and all. We will watch 100 Foot Journey. We will begin the program at 9:50 a.m.

02/12 - Come & Craft
Prepare the Valentine card you will exchange on February 14th! We will craft with Naomi. No special skills required!

02/26 - Mongolian 
Nationality Day with Suuri! A great opportunity to learn and discover this country and its culture!

Learn more about African American History in Pittsburgh with Larry Glasco, professor of African American history at Pitt. He will also be speaking about August Wilson who is an African American playwrite from Pittsburgh.

December Meeting Programs

12/04 - Gingerbread house
Please purchase at a drugstore (CVS, Rite Aid) or a grocery store, a Gingerbread house kit. It’s less than $10.00. Naomi will instruct the group on how to make these cute traditional little houses. We can also make them out of graham crackers and those supplies will be provided in limited quantity.

12/11 - American Indian dancing
American Indian Dancing provided by the Council of Three Rivers Indian Reservation in Pittsburgh. They will explain about their culture and history, answer your questions, and demonstrate traditional dances! Don’t miss this great opportunity!

12/18 - Holiday party
We will enjoy food together and sing traditional holiday carols. Santa may even come to entertain the children!!!

12/25 - NO meeting

We will be doing an interesting leaf craft.

At IWAP we will have a real American Thanksgiving Celebration with turkey and all of the side dishes. We all bring a dish to share in this wonderful feast.

October Meeting Programs

Mark your October calendar with IWAP meetings!

10/02 - Food tasting
Enjoy tasting and understanding American Foods or International food. Each IWAP member will bring food to share that is made from a box. Please bring the box and the dish you have prepared so that we can all understand some of the unique items found in our supermarkets. Often the recipes for these dishes are found on the back of the box... ENJOY!

10/09 - French Nationality
Day - Anne-Sophie will talk about her country and explain the culture. We will have an opportunity to ask questions and learn about France.

10/16 - Small group discussion
Topic: Women's place in society (1/2 day for Pittsburgh schools)

10/23 - David Vinski is back!!
Our favorite dance instructor will be on hand to teach folk dancing.

10/30 - Pumpkin carving
Get ready for Halloween! Come to carve your own pumpkin. Naomi will give us the details as we get closer to the date.

09/04 - Back together meeting
Come see your old friends and welcome new members to IWAP. Please renew your membership on that day (25$/year- check or cash). Think about questions you have about living in Pittsburgh and write them down for us to discuss the next meeting. There will be a brief introduction to our organization.

09/11 - Learning about Pittsburgh
Everything you want to know about Pittsburgh will be discussed! Your questions (written down on Sept. 4th) will be answered and more about how to get around the city will be discussed.

09/18 - Gestures and greetings in the US
Come to share and discuss gestures and greetings in the US. The meeting will be held in several small groups.

May 8 - Travel USA
Members are invited to bring maps and brochures and talk about trips they are taking this summer.

May 15 - Summer in Pittsburgh
Small group discussions on things to do in and near Pittsburgh over the summer led by experienced Pittsburghers.

Saturday, May 17 - IWAP End of Year Picnic!!

April 3 - International Game Day  
Bring a game from your home country and teach us how to play !

April 10 - Earth Day 
We will honor the Earth and highlight the environment.

April 17 - No meeting  
(No Pittsburgh school classes)

April 24 - White Elephant Sale
A good opportunity to bring things that we no longer want, and find things you need for less money.
Each person can price the objects as they see fit.
The objects will be donated to IWAP to be sold on the same day. Money raised will help IWAP provide services (English class, baby sitting ...).

March Meeting Programs

March 6 - International Women's Day  
Dona will talk about the significance of this world-wide holiday and introduce topics that we will discuss in small groups.

March 13 - St. Patrick's Day and Irish Dancing with David Vinski. 
He will present a brief history of the holiday then show us some typical Irish folk dancing that we can all participate in.

March 20- International Game Day 
All women are invited to share their country's playground or parlor games. Please bring a game from home that you can show others how to play.

March 27 - Columbian Nationality Day 
Veronica will enlighten us about her home country: its history, geography, leadership and culture.

February 6th - Nationality Day - CHINA
A very special presentation about this vast, important and influential country of China. If you would like to bring anything to show from China, please do.

February 13th - Valentine's Day Crafts
We celebrate Valentine's Day exchanging beautiful or funny cards with friends and loved ones.
Be prepared for a fun morning of creating Valentines. Please bring a pair of scissors if you have them.

February 20th - Nationality Day - SIBERIA, RUSSIA
We are so fortunate to have an IWAP member from a part of the world of which we know very little except that it is even colder than this winter in Pittsburgh.
Mary Beketova will share all about her far away country.

February 27th - Nationality Day - JAPAN
Several of our members from Japan will share their country's unique features with us from food to culture to art to history and all that lies in between.

January 2014 Meeting Programs


January 2 - NO MEETING

January 9th - International Celebrations
Small group discussions on holidays in our varied countries: why they are celebrated, what is done, what is eaten, and anything else you would like to share. If you want, bring an article to show that typifies that holiday.
January 16th - Martin Luther King, Jr. and Civil Rights
January 20th is a National Holiday to remember and to celebrate Martin Luther King, the most well known leader of the Civil Rights Movement in the US. A speaker will focus on the movement and the important changes and new laws enacted at this time.

January 23rd - Indonesian Nationality Day
A member will illustrate many interesting and wonderful things about this nation of islands where 215 million people from more than 200 ethnic groups live today.

January 30th - Craft Sharing
We love doing crafts and this is the day for everyone to share their crafts. We will have tables set up so people can move from table to table to learn a new craft. Think about what you would like to demonstrate. In the past we have featured calligraphy, patchwork, knitting, crochet, origami, and vegetable sculpting.

December Meeting Programs


December 5th - Gingerbread Houses
Carol P will help us make gingerbread houses, an American holiday tradition. Buy a Gingerbread House kit from a store like Rite-Aid, Aldi’s, CVS, Giant Eagle or Michaels or bring a box of graham crackers and a small sharp knife. Carol will supply a plate, candy decorations, and royal icing “glue” to stick it all together. Bring some newspaper to work on and a plastic bag to take your house home. You could continue the project at home - maybe make a whole village!

December 12th - Square Dancing
Square dancing was first documented in 17th century England and later throughout Europe. It came to the US with the settlers. Square dancing movements are based on steps and figures used in traditional folk dances and social dances. Dancers are prompted or cued through the steps by a caller to the beat of the music. David Vinski will call the steps for us.

December 19th - Christmas Party
This week will be our final meeting of 2013 and will be a holiday party with a gift exchange. The celebration will feature lots of food, music and even a visit from Santa Claus. Members will bring dishes to share for pot-luck.

December 26th - No IWAP Meeting

November Meeting Programs

November 7 - Street Safety
An officer from the Pittsburgh Police Department will present information on keeping safe at home and on the streets.

November 14 - Nationality day presentation on South Korea
Our members from South Korea will tell us about their country.

November 21st - Thanksgiving Lunch
On this day American members will bring in parts of the traditional Thanksgiving meal including a roasted turkey; internationals will bring harvest time dishes from their home countries and all members will enjoy the meal.

November 28th - Thanksgiving Day
No IWAP Program - Schools will be closed!

October Meeting Programs

October 3 - Food Tasting
Buy a packaged food, prepare it according to the package directions and bring it in to share so we can all learn what’s in those boxes on the grocery shelves.

October 10 - Gentle Yoga with Kate Junker
Bring a mat or large towel and dress comfortably for Kate to lead us in gentle yoga positions for health and peace of mind. Kate has led this class for us in previous years and has also taught at the Chautauqua Institution.

October 17 - American Nationality Day
Members from the USA will talk about its industry, geography, culture and foods.

October 24 - International Social Customs
Small group discussions of phrases and gestures used in different countries that may be unique to our various cultures.

October 31 - Pumpkin Carving
Bring a small to medium size pumpkin to make into a jack-o-lantern for Halloween. Naomi will demonstrate.

September Meeting Programs


September 12, at 9:30-11:30 AM:
This will be your first chance to join IWAP for the 2013-2014 year.  Meet old and new friends during the social hour, and then learn about the history of IWAP and some of the things we have planned for the coming year.
Welcome to the 1st IWAP meeting of the new season! :)


September 19th, at 9:30-11:30 AM:
This meeting will be "LIVING IN PITTSBURGH"- How to get around, where everything is and where and how to shop. It is the opportunity to ask all the questions you have thought about. We will have small groups so it will be easy to talk.

September 26th, at 9:30-11:30 AM:  
This week we will watch a short video about Pittsburgh’s history from its Native American origin to the modern city we see today. We will learn about the immigrants who came before us and the impact they had.
